I personaly have checked into this and unless you use the "-image" command the only thing that the disc installs is the main connection client and simple character data, and map details for the begining of the chapter that you bought. Using the "-image" command forces a download of almost all data that pertains to the chapter that yo currently have. But even then there may be some data that will download as you go into a new area, or like one of the other posters said if someone in your group has some piece of equipment that you haven't seen yet in the game. Until you visit each area you only have the basic data about the maps and the characters. Once you have visited an area then there might be a couple files that you will have to download especialy if they added something to the map. If I know I haven't ben to a particular area or mission in a while then I will go into it wiht henchies to load the content then cut out to join a group making the wait for the group less (unless someone else hasn't been there yet). Too date the Guild Wars main file is about 2.1 to 3 gigs well over what a couple cd's can hold and that depends upon how many screencaps you have taken, the main data file should be in the range of 2.1 to 2.2 gigs thatsit.

OK, I've read all the posts here and I'm a bit confused. I posted a question earlier and thought I had it straight but now I'm not so sure.
I'm thinking of getting a new CPU. On my current system, I installed tbe Prophecies and Factions campaign from CD's that I purchased at a retail store. Nightfall I bought from the online store and got immediate access.
The question I asked in my earlier post was that if I do buy a new computer, do I have to reinstall Prophecies and Factions in order to play GW on the new computer. The reply I received for that post was that all I had to do if I did get a new computer was run the small client program that would allow me to log in to my GW account with my user name and password and I would have access to everything in my account and the game as if I was still using the old computer.
So I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is that true and if so am I going to experience the long load times some people were experiencing in this post?

Arteful, you'll have to either copy/paste your gw.dat file from the old computer to the new one or re download the entire thing. Either way you'll have full access to your account.

sorry but wrong again.
check your data files on your install discs and it is 1.5 GIGS more or less.
EDIT..........THAT IS COMPRESSED ON DISC GIGS.....on your drive decompressed is larger
WHEN DECOMPRESSED it is much larger on your drive
as for not installing anything not needed right now explain how i can just leave it at the login screen and download more than a GIG of not need now data.

Some people arn't reading...I never said the -image command doesn't work. Of course it does.
What I said was that when you install GW from a disk, it ONLY installs under a megabyte. This is a fact, this is what happened when -I- personally installed it. The rest, I had to download. Despite having -two- disks. It never even asked for the second disk.
-image is -downloading-. Installing from the CD is not. These are two seperate things.
Installing the client before you -image or fire up the client for the first time -only- installs a slight amount of data. The rest is downloaded. Anyone who says otherwise apparently hasn't read that -this is precisely what happened to me-. I am not hallucinating, thank you very much. I would appreciate not being called a liar when I'm stating my own experiences.
Yes, the data on the disks is quite a bit. But it simply does not copy it to your hard drive. That's how it is. The rest comes from the internet. Maybe the Factions and Nightfall installers on their respective CDs are better with that, but the Prophecies installer is not.
-image is the only way I've found that gets more than around 780kb after installation.

I'm sorry if I sound completely dense here Kam.
If I don't copy/paste my gw.dat file to the new computer then the first time I log into my account it will download all my account information to the new computer. And from that point on there should be no long loading periods like has been discussed here? I'm I understanding that correctly?

i have highlited your problem.
all 3 (three) chapters of data are downloaded even if you do not have that chapter (s)
from your statement you do not have Factions or Nightfall .
since they came out after your disc was stamped you have to get the rest by download.
i did a reinstall recently from the Nightfall DVD and only had a small update plus the event download.
it installs everything on the cd/dvd to prevent the slow dial up connection person from downloading for a week 24/7 just to get the data right there on the disc.
if it wont be installed why have it there in the first place?

You'll have to download the entire gw.date file from scratch, if you don't copy/paste. Your account information is stored on the GW servers, but you'll still need to download the game itself. I don't know how much of that's included with the client from the main site, but no matter what you'd be looking at quite a bit of downloading.
Just stick the gw.dat file on a portable hdd and put it on the new computer. It'll save you tons of time.

Thanks for the info Kam.
I don't have another HD to save the .dat file to so looks like I'll have a large download once I run the client and long on to my account the first time on the new system. But once that big initial download is complete that should be the end of it except for the future updates from Anet.
Thanks again.

BURN THE DAT TO A DVD AND COPY IT TO THE NEW GW FOLDER
that is what everybody else seems to do.
and the client is tiny and the same for all chapters.
all the rest is server side data

I rather turn it on, and let it download 2GB all at once through the night than taking a coffee break every other area.
But yea, i guess i'll look out for a torrent, or just copy it from someone.
Obviously it's a great way to add new content i assume. They can slip in a new zone 'on-the-fly' . That i won't mind, but the entire game streamed to me in this manner is a bit much :P

leave at the start up screen and it downloads the files just leave it over night

Your still a little off there, -image downloads ALL CURRENT data, regardless of which game you have. Keep in mind that there are updates on a regular basis, and most areas/items get updated in some small way during these updates. This is why your having to download data when you go to some areas after a full update. The only way to stop this from happening is run the -image command after every time they do an update. Personally, I have my -image on a schedule that runs once a week to grab any new updates that come up, so the only time I have to wait for any downloads is when they do emergency updates.

assuming that that is where your gw.exe is located
be prepared to go afk for several hours while it downloads though
